by Ben Bussey Have you heard the good news? Vertigo is now officially the single greatest film ever made in the history of the world. The cultural elite have knocked their heads together and decided that Citizen Kane just ain’t the slam-dunk it used to be, and have dethroned it in favour of Hitchcock’s dizzying, […]
by Stephanie Scaife Caution: spoilers ahead… 1987. Regan is President, the Cold War continues, Thatcher is re-elected Prime Minister, the first ever episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation airs on television… and on 31st July Joel Schumacher’s teen vampire flick The Lost Boys was unleashed on US audiences. 25 years later and it has […]
Review by Ben Bussey I’m going to come right out and say it: I’m really not a sports fan. Generally speaking, that’s not too unusual for a film geek, is it? Ball games, athletics; you name it, I’m not a fan of it (beyond a very casual interest in martial arts and extreme sports). This being the case, you can imagine my apathy about […]
Review by Keri O’Shea Do you remember when WWF had (almost) nothing to do with endangered wildlife and everything to do with pro-wrestling? (Let’s try to put Jake Roberts and Koko B. Ware out of our minds for now, if you please.) Anyway, if you do remember, and better still, if all of this means […]
Review by Ben Bussey “Poor old Job,” as is remarked more than once in this film. That famously upbeat book of the Bible is a common point of reference here, centring as it does on a good man whose existence is turned into a living hell as the ultimate test of his faith in God. […]
Review by Ben Bussey We all know his name. We know that he doesn’t sleep, he waits; we know that if he goes in the water he doesn’t get wet, the water gets him; we know that if you Google him on the right day you’ll get no results because you don’t find him, he […]
Review by Nia Edwards-Behi I don’t think I’ve ever watched an American ‘TV movie’. I’m sure there are plenty of good ones, but I have a preconception in my mind that I associate with the phrase ‘TV movie’ that is less than complimentary. It conjures up bad lighting, melodramatic acting and illogical plot lines. Dark […]
Review by Ben Bussey Just what are we to do if the price of petrol – oh, alright non-British readers, we can call it gas (even though it’s clearly a liquid) – keeps on rising? Some might say it was time to give the electric car a go, but this memo obviously didn’t reach the […]
Review by Dustin Hall Rites of Spring starts off with great promise. Text crawls over the screen, speaking of the eerie regularity of which young girls in this rural area are kidnapped and then never recovered. Cue creepy old Midwestern homes in deserted fields, accompanied by excellent and equally creepy music. Our heroines share some […]
By Ben Bussey Beware of spoilers ahead – but come on, if you haven’t seen RoboCop what the hell have you been doing? We’ve seen a fair few landmark films celebrate major anniversaries so far this year: 25 years of Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and Evil Dead 2, as well as 30 years of New […]
by Ben Bussey Okay. There’s a distinct possibility you already know what this is. This short film starring Tom Jane premiered this past weekend at San Diego Comic Con and has been popping up on many sites and blogs today, most of which have not been shy about giving the game away. For the benefit […]
